HOUSTON (KIAH)– The Storm Prediction Center is forecasting a rare “high risk” of severe weather Monday and/or Monday night. They’re expecting a “major severe weather outbreak” with extreme severe storms developing in the Central U.S.
It’s an ideal tornado setup, likely producing multiple strong, long-tracked tornadoes. The worst of it will is expected to occur in an area from Wichita Falls, TX to Oklahoma City, OK to Wichita, KS to Kansas City, MO.
In addition to tornadoes, giant hail (2″ or larger) and damaging straight-line winds (70+ mph) are possible.
"Tornado Alley" has sprung back to life, with the majority of tornadoes erupting in central U.S. states which include: Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Tornado activity is still extremely active this month.
Texas leads the nation for the average number each year only because of its size. Surprisingly, when looking at how many tornadoes occur per fixed area then Florida leads followed by Kansas, and again surprisingly, Maryland.

Tornado Alley is a part of the central United States with a unique combination of geographic and meteorological factors that make it more susceptible to tornadoes. This area encompasses much of northern Texas northward through Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri and parts of Louisiana, Iowa, Nebraska, and eastern Colorado.
While there is no official designation, the area known as Tornado Alley is generally designated as between Texas and South Dakota. AccuWeather identified the area as northern Texas northward through Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri and parts of Louisiana, Iowa, Nebraska and eastern Colorado.
The majority of tornadoes in 2024 have touched down in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Ohio has also experienced a surge in tornadoes, with 54 reports so far. Preliminary tornado reports by state between Jan. 1 and May 8, 2024.

CLEVELAND (WJW) — When many people think of tornado outbreaks, Tornado Alley states like Oklahoma. Texas and Missouri come to mind. But, so far this spring Ohio is outpacing those states, and many other states that historical data show are notorious for many tornadoes.
Tornadoes have been documented in every U.S. state (not including the non-state territories of Guam, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Puerto Rico) at least once since 1950, although some regions and states are hit by tornadoes far more than others.
According to a study published in 2018, this area has been moving for several reasons from its traditional location in the Great Plains to more of a focus in the Southeast including here in the Mid-South.
Dixie Alley includes much of the area of the lower Mississippi Valley. It stretches from eastern Texas and Arkansas across Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and mid to western Kentucky to upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina; the area reaches as far north as southeast Missouri.
Tornado alley is typically identified as including parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Indiana, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, and Ohio. These states, along with the state of Florida, are some of the parts of the US that are most prone to tornadoes, but tornadoes have been recorded in all 50 states.
More than 200 severe storms were reported Wednesday from New York to Texas. 2024 has been the most active tornado season to date since 2017 with 859 tornadoes reported so far. The average number of tornadoes from January to May this year is 578.
What states don't have tornadoes? Alaska, Rhode Island, and Washington, D.C. rarely see tornadoes — they averaged zero tornadoes annually over the last 25 years, according to our analysis of NOAA data.
